How to Make Your Own Cupcake Tower or Cupcake Tree

You may have seen these eye-catching centerpieces at weddings and grand celebrations, and the cupcake tower is a great way to serve dessert in a unique way. Cupcake towers for weddings and other formal events can take several hours to put together, but you can make your own cupcake tree or tower with cake boards, inexpensive separators, and a few other materials. Here are some important things to keep in mind when you're building a cupcake tower or cupcake tree:

Building the Cupcake Tower Stand

The cupcake tower stand is designed with a stack of different-sized cake boards. The highest tier will have the smallest cake board diameter, but you won't be able fit more than 4 or 5 cupcakes on a board that's smaller than 6". The 'ideal' diameters for the cupcake boards are 20", 16", 12", 9" and 6". If you want to create just a three-tier cupcake tower, use the 12" board as the base and work your way up to the 6".

Cover each cake board with aluminum foil and a metallic doily, if you wish. You can now assemble the tiers.

Creating Tiers for the Cupcake Tower

Premade cupcake trees and towers are usually separated by metal or plastic columns, but when you're making your own, you can use thin vases or wedding cake columns as separators. Just use a glue gun to connect each cake board to the base and let it set. You can even paint the columns in the theme colors of the event, or cover them with glitter, foil or fabric to enhance your display.

Prepare Your Cupcakes

The easiest way to handle cupcakes for your cupcake tower is to freeze them ahead of time and decorate them right before placing them on the boards. This will prevent them getting bent out of shape (literally) as you stack the cakes together on the boards. Just ice the cakes as you place them in position so you reduce the chance of an icing mess. Secure the cupcakes in position by dabbing a small amount of buttercream or royal icing on the base before pressing them down firmly on the board; this will stop them from shifting around as guests pick up their cupcake from the tower.
