Common Dream Symbols

Dream symbols and interpretation can be a major part of psychology. It can also be just plain fun. Not every dream has deep significance, but some can. For your reading pleasure, here are some of the most typical dream symbols and what they usually represent.

Work

Considering the amount of time the average person spends at work, it isn't surprising to dream about work. Dreaming about work could refer to your job, or it could be letting you know you've got a job to do. It can also reveal your true feelings about your job.

Stairs

This can be showing you which direction you are going in terms of finances or social status. Or it could represent a rise or fall in consciousness (going down to subconscious or up to enlightened knowledge).

Rooms

Rooms represent the different areas of the subconscious where memories are stored just out of our reach. Entering a new room could indicate you're ready to remember something.

Paralysis

Paralysis in your dream can show that you feel helpless to control a situation in your life. Other parts of the dream can be clues to what this particular situation is.

Falling

Falling in your dream can be a key symbol. It can indicate that you feel you are failing at something, you are overwhelmed by something, or something in your life is out of control.

Death

This could simply symbolize your fear of dying. However, it could also represent change in your life. If a dead person appears in your dream, it could represent your past relationships with that person.

Killing

This is not necessarily a disturbing symbol. It could represent your desire to rid yourself of some aspect of your personality. This can also indicate your feelings towards someone, or putting an end to something negative or unwanted in your life.

Nakedness

Being naked in your dream can symbolize the "naked truth" about you. If you're nervous that you're naked, maybe you are nervous that an aspect of yourself will be exposed to someone. Nudity can also symbolize childhood innocence.
