In my family, extended family included, I am the only one over the age of sixteen who is not seeing someone seriously, married, or has a child of my own. That is right, I am a single gal. Truth be told, I love being single. I love the freedom it gives me and being able to do what I want when I want to, no compromising for me. While being a single gal may not seem a big thing to you it is to my family. You see, I am from a very traditional Mexican American family where everyone before and around me follows the same pattern. We grow up, find a partner, marry, buy a house and then raise a family. I on the other hand have "stubbornly" decided to stay single and unmarried even though I have graduated from college and that is definitely not how things are supposed to go.
Yes, being single has its downfalls but everything is that way. As long as I am thoroughly enjoying myself I will happily continue my life as a single gal.
Things that come with being a single gal:
So You Must Be: Everyone plays a perpetual game of fill in the blank with me. You're single so you must be ___________. You name it I've heard it and it never is positive.
Decisions, Decisions: One of my favorite things about being single is getting to pick where I go out on the weekends. I do not have to try and talk an unwilling boyfriend into turning off the video games to spend a night out with me or have to go to his favorite sports bar when I really want to salsa. Of course, if I just feel like curling up on the couch for a night in with a good read I do not have to explain my reasons to anyone.
Next!: Being single means a single night out can put you in the path of several men and you are handed the power refusing or approving every single one of them. On the other hand having so many men to deal with can be as much of a pain as it is fun. Every single gal can use some of the advice that I give in my article How to Drive Men Away in Night Clubs
