Got kids? We have five in our house, and they all love to eat. With Christmas break just around the corner, the last thing you need is the worry of spending all of your time in the kitchen preparing food for the kids, especially that which may be costly. Therefore, why not try some of these affordable and easy-to-make snack ideas instead. These have been a big success in our home; in fact, most of them have been handpicked by the kids themselves. Each recipe offers various options to meet the needs of their individual preferences. For instance, our children will often come up with additional ideas for toppings or fillings so feel free to experiment and take advice from your children as well.

For an easy and scrumptious morning or afternoon snack, try some Monkey Muffins. This is basically a smaller version of Monkey Bread accomplished in less time and is both fixed and served individually to each child’s liking. All you need is a 12-count muffin pan, 2 cans of 10-count biscuits, ½ cup of sugar, ½ cup of brown sugar, ½ stick of butter, 2 tbsp. of both water and cinnamon. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl or Ziploc bag; set aside. Cut each biscuit into quarter pieces and roll or shake them in the sugar/cinnamon mixture until well coated. Place 6 pieces into each lightly greased muffin (leftover pieces can be tossed out or reused for additional muffins). Heat the butter on the stove or in microwave until melted; add water and brown sugar. Stir until blended (approximately 1 minute). Pour evenly over biscuits discarding any excess. Optionally, you can sprinkle in some nuts or other toppings (my kids like Cheerios). Bake in preheated 350º oven for about 12-14 minutes or until golden brown. Serve while warm or reheat later.
