The greatest misconception people have about starting an eBay business is that it is easy. Many are under the false impression that they can weed stuff out of their attics or garages, post it on eBay and then rake in their earnings.

This is partially true, but mostly false. True, you may have a lot of stuff in your attic that an eBay buyer may want, but a lot of the time, you have to sort through a lot of junk, to find the products people are going to want to buy.

One of the big mistakes people make right off the bat after deciding they want to sell on eBay is to automatically assume that they will not have to put the same amount of time and effort into their business as any other brick-and-mortar or online business owner - and they couldn't be more wrong in assuming that. To succeed (and actually have a business on eBay), you have to think like a business owner (unless, of course, you are just posting products for the fun of it).

So, to start with, the question to ask yourself is why you are selling on eBay? Do you want to make a little extra money (with no real sales goals set for yourself, or do you want to make a business out of this? Regardless of whether you are the former or the latter, you will need to still follow the following steps if you want to actually sell something on this online auction site.

Now that it has been established that you want to sell on eBay, you need to decide what you are going to sell. This should be your primary concern in the beginning as it will obviously make or break your sale or your business. You need to know your product and be able to speak to it if a customer has an inquiry or when it comes down to simple things such as marketing and item descriptions.

Takeaways
  • Many people assume selling on eBay is easy
  • It can be. However, it's a business like any other
  • If you want to start an eBay business, it requires a lot of pre-planning and research
