Block out a weekend, come and explore off the beaten track on the Wilderness Road Heritage Highway, Kentucky. Come back in time to the Civil War. And before that, to the time when the trail was first marked by Daniel Boone. There is history to be seen up close and personal here from before the USA was even thought of. Bring your camping gear if you want a real chance to explore off the beaten track in a big way.

The Wilderness Road Heritage Highway starts in Middlesboro Kentucky. Take time to visit the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. Maybe just take a short hike, to get you up to speed for when you get to explore the sections that are really off the beaten track.

About 10 miles east, you come to the community of Pineville, Kentucky. More beautiful scenery with both the Pine Mountain State Resort Park and The Pine Mountain State Forest. Pineville is an outdoorman's paradise, with plenty of hunting and fishing.

By the time you reach the next point ,Barbourville, Kentucky still on route 25, you just might be ready to call it a day, especially if you took all the opportunities you had to explore off the beaten track in the parks you have already visited. Dr. Thomas Walker State Historical Site Barbourville, Kentucky.. A part of the State Parks department, the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historical Site is a great place for a picnic lunch. It is the site of the first cabin built in Kentucky by the first explorer of Kentucky, Dr. Thomas Walker in 1750. You can visit a replica of the cabin on the site.

You can really explore off the beaten track here, on the actual pioneer trails the Wilderness Road and Boone's Trace. Walk in the footsteps of the earliest of the pioneers. The park is 800 acres, with campgrounds a swimming pool and the Mountain Life Museum where you can see a pioneer settlement.
