Treating bipolar disorder (also referred to as manic-depression) can be difficult and will most likely be a lifelong battle. In order to effectively treat bipolar disorder (BPD), you first need to make sure that you have the proper diagnosis. Many mental illnesses, such as unipolar depression and borderline personality disorder can be confused with BPD. There are also several variations of BPD and every individual may experience varying extremes of the disorder.

Seeking out a professional diagnosis is very important. Trying to diagnose yourself is a mistake that could cost you your life. Medical terminology can be confusing and there are several mental illnesses which share many of the same symptoms. That being said, don't be afraid to seek a second opinion if you doubt your diagnosis or to educate yourself via the Internet or your public library. This way, you will know what questions to ask your doctor.

Once you have the appropriate diagnosis, what does it mean to manage bipolar disorder successfully?

- BUILD A SUPPORT NETWORK. Educating your loved ones about your disorder is essential, as it will help them to understand your moods and recognize when you are in need of help. Joining a support group organized specifically for people suffering from BPD can be very helpful. Being part of such a group gives you a chance to discuss your feeling and symptoms with other people who understand your situation. Your family may try their best to empathize with you, but they can't truly understand if they don't suffer the disease themselves.
