When your children are used to playing outside and have so much energy that you could use them as batteries, it can be painful for both you and the children when they have to remain inside. Whether it's because of the weather or because you can't keep track of them outdoors, indoor games can be few and far between, especially those that will wear out your kids sufficiently for them to fall asleep at night. Here are several indoor activities for active kids.

Indoor Activities for Active Kids: Door-Mounted Basketball Nets

If you have a game room or a space in the kids' rooms, you can mount a basketball net on the door. This is an inexpensive activity that isn't likely to do any damage as long as you use soft Nerf balls. Kids who love basketball will be able to shoot hoops indoors while still getting rid of some of that excess energy.

Indoor Activities for Active Kids: Dart Boards

This is another great indoor activity for active kids, but is best used in a game room or the garage. Make sure you get an age-appropriate dart board that won't injure your children while they play. It is also a good idea to lay down several ground rules, starting with: Don't use each other for dart boards! Plus, this can be either a solo activity or a group one.

Indoor Activities for Active Kids: Build a Fort

All kids love forts because it exercises their creativity and imagination. Just about anything in the house can serve as a useful fort, including old cardboard boxes, the sheets you use to cover the plants when it gets cold, furniture in your living room and Lego sets.

Indoor Activities for Active Kids: Build Models

My kids love building models and it really helps with their concentration and dexterity. This works especially well if your kids are into a certain type of vehicle, such as planes or trucks. You can order models from your local toy store or online and they take several hours to put together. This might not seem to be an active game, but it certainly requires lots of concentration.
