How to Teach Your Child Colors

Once your child is about two years of age you can start teaching him the different colors that exist. Two years of age is a good time to start because the learning can be gradual and will help prepare him or her for preschool. The following are some suggestions as how you can teach your child colors.Start teaching your child color by reading a book about colors. A good book that I have found that my child likes is called, Elmo's Guessing Game About Colors by Sesame Street. It is a wonderful book that talks about the basic colors such as red, blue and orange. Elmo is the main character in the book and other Sesame Street characters such as Big Bird help out in teaching your child the colors of different objects. For example, Elmo talks about the color red and shows things that are red such as an apple and a fire truck. There are also other reading books that you can find at the bookstore or local library that talk about colors.
Play color-learning games with your child. After reading and familiarizing my own child with the different colors I would play a color game with him. For example, I would ask him what color is a banana? What color is a tree? At first your child may just guess but before you know it they will be able to tell you what color the tree is.
Purchase a coloring book with crayons. I think crayons are a wonderful way for a child to learn their colors. The crayons in the box contain the basic color scheme. As your child is picking up a crayon you can ask, "What color are you coloring with?" You can also point out to the different pictures colored. For example, you can ask, "What color did you color the ball?" "What color is the house?"
Have your child watch a video about colors. There are so many different videos you can find at the bookstore or toy store that talk about colors. One that I purchased and like is called, Crazy For Colors by BubbleBee Kids. The video shows different things such as a truck and talks about what color say the truck is. This is a fun interactive video that gets your child involved in learning their colors.
