Being a sales person in this day and age is hard work. When the economy slows down it's really hard work to sell products. One of the first things to remember in sales, is when a customer walks into the door of your place of business, he or she is at least a little apprehensive. The reason is because they don't really want to part with their hard earned money. And they probably think that they're not going to get what they want at a price that they want to pay. So every customer is usually a little bit "scared". This is especially true with big ticket items such as automobiles and furniture.

Every good salesperson knows that there is a kind of "war" going on between them and the customer. The customer thinks the price should be lower or they should get more for the price, and the salesperson doesn't want to comply and considers the customer as wasting his time. So in selling, there are several techniques to use that result in a sale. The first thing a good sales person will do is to get the customer to overcome his anxiety of the situation and his "fear" of you. You cannot sell to a scared person. You need to get the customer's confidence in you and get him on your side. After all, you and the customer are there for only one thing; that is to make a beneficial sale for both sides.

The really good salesperson knows the Law of 250. Just about every single person knows about 250 people in his or her life. Weddings and funerals will prove this. If you give every customer that walks into your place of business genuine, courteous and friendly service, you can almost bet that the customer will tell his friends and family about you. On the other hand, if you come across with a bad attitude, or even utter an angry remark, the customer that you have turned away means that you also have turned away 250 people he knows.

Takeaways
  • overcoming a customer's "fear"
  • smiling is very important
  • use "birddogs"
