Picasso Paintings Valued at $66 Million Stolen

Thieves made a stealthy overnight heist in Paris, France, robbing two valuable Picasso paintings valued at $66 million from Picasso's grand-daughter.

There were two people at home, in the Paris apartment of Picasso grand-daughter, Diana Widmaier-Picasso, when the robbery occurred. The thieves were so quiet and stealthy that the occupants of the apartment didn't hear them.

The thieves made away with two valuable art treasures. One of the paintings was cut out of it's frame. The burglars left few clues. The police were not sure how they gained entrance. According to police, there were no signed of breaking and entering in the house.

The two painting were of women that the famous artist loved. One of the paintings was of Picasso's daughter, Maya. The second painting is of Picasso's second wife, Jacqueline.

The paintings, "Maya and the Doll" and "Portrait of Jacqueline" disappeared overnight Monday to Tuesday. The paintings will become part of a total of 549 Picasso works of art that are missing or stolen.

According to the director of the Picasso Museum, Anne Baldassari, there were several paintings and drawings stolen from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasse, an art historian and author of a book titled "Art Can Only be Erotic." The police only mentioned two of the total artworks stolen. Fox News reports that Ann Baldassari said, "It was a very large theft."

"Maya and the Doll" is a colorful portrait of Picasso''s daughter as a young girl. It depicts her as a young blond girl in pigtails, eyes askew in Cubist perspective.

"Portrait of Jacqueline" depicts Picasso's last wife. Picasso married Jacqueline Roque in 1961, when he was 79 and she was in her mid 30's.

Pablo Picasso was a prolific Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist and ceramist. According to the website of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Picasso produced more than 20,000 works of art.

In 1989 thieves stole 12 paintings worth $17 million from another on Picasso's grand-daughters, All of those paintings were later recovered.
