When Piratz Tavern, a new pirate theme restaurant, popped up in Silver Spring, and just before my daughter's birthday at that, I was excited. Piratz Tavern seemed like a quirky kinda place I might like to go. I drove by it and it looked rustic and piratey. So one day I did go to Piratz Tavern, for some noon hour grub with me husband.

The inside of Piratz Tavern is decorated in a pirate motif. Surprise- not. Piratz Tavern wait -buccaneers dress in complete pirate regalia, head scarves, balloon pants, broad sashes, and one even wore an eye patch. The decoration spilled over with Jolly Rogers and cutlasses, treasure maps, chests and booty from places real pirates once plundered. The Piratz Tavern draws its grub from locations pirates of long ago put in to shore- Jamaica, Mozambique, Portugal, Thailand, and India- a rather eclectic and odd mix, but one that makes sense given the pirate theme.

Before we even sat down at Piratz Tavern, our wait-buccaneer was telling us about the upcoming magic shows. Magic? Now where do I make me "x" to sign up for the birthday dinner for me daughter at Piratz Tavern? We nailed it down. We got the time of the performance, the day, and a promise that Piratz Tavern would do up the table with special décor. Looking good, so far.

And then we dug into our grub. We sat in the very back of the restaurant, just inside the attractive outdoor patio. Piratz Tavern's sound system is a bit loud. There were only a few other landlubbers in the place. Yet, it was still a bit hard to carry on conversation. It costs a fair sack of doubloons for some noon hour grub at Piratz Tavern. Appetizers ranged from $5-$8. Sandwiches were $7-$10. Salads cost $7-$10. And cooked entrees were $13-$24, with most tending toward the middle to high end of that range. Desserts were $6 each. Grog wasn't cheap either at Piratz Tavern. Most of the beers are $5.25.

I had a terrible experience there. The article will be coming out shortly.

I think its very telling that you wrote this in March and the owner did not bother to reply until May. A quick Google search shows that in general the bad reviews outweigh the good by quite a bit. I've been there a couple of times and while I think many of the staff are very good, and the theme is pretty cool, the poor management is what will cause this new place to close. That is ultimately where the resposibility and blame must fall. And as usual, there are the rumours of cash flow problems and irregularities, which may be why they always seem to be out of numerous dishes. Too bad, since we need more locally owned independednt places.

I was taken aback by your article (very well written, though) I am the owner of Piratz Tavern, and I never heard one word about your daughter's b-day. As a mother myself, I feel absolutely terrible. I will get to the bottom of who you spoke with. We have performances on Fri & Sat nights, rarely on Sundays, We have yet to include majic shows, altthough it is a great idea. We were not closed for a private party hat day, so I am even more perplexed. We are a tavern, but we cater to all ages, although I recommend families with children come earlier. We have tatoos, eye patches and pirate rings for the little ones, as well as fun stuff for older pirates celebrations. Our food is very good, but as everything is cooked from scratch it does take a bit. I apologize again for such a big misunderstanding and suggest that anyone wishing to celebrate a special event insist upon speaking with the owner. We generally do not accept reservations for under 6 people. I hope everything worked out o.k. and

My daughter would love this one. We are going to Maryland and Delaware this summer. I will have to remember to check this one out.

It was sounding like a fun place until you got to the part where they left you high and dry. Hopefully everything worked out for your daughter in the end.

I hope they lose every drop of their business. Poor customer service NEVER has an excuse EVER adn what they did was the worst yet.

Kathy, A business that can't even apologize for failing a child on her birthday should not expect a second visit. Whose interest does that serve? Uh- oh yeah. Theirs, not mine.

I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. I am a performer at Piratz Tavern. I am the Captain of Pirates for Sail LLC (www.piratesforsail.com, if you'd like to see what we do, a crew of 14 strong improv and musical pirates. We started performing there about 2 months ago, every Friday and Saturday nite. I will admit that they are getting off to a bit of a rough start, but most new businesses do, as did we, and you live and learn. I think you might find another visit, when we are there of course, a bit more entertaining and enjoyable. I will warn you in advance though, we do pass around the "Captain's Chest" for tips.

Very good review. The pirate lingo was a great touch. I am sorry to hear though that they had ruined your daughter's birthday.

Places with this kind of service never last long. Entertaining article, though.

I was all set to book a meal and order some grog until I got to page two and saw that they jerked you around worse than Johnny Depp. Good article!
