Working at Ground Zero : Day Two
Embed:
It was 7;00 pm and my second day at Ground Zero. I had just started at the burning station. We referred to it as the train station simply because it was 15 feet off the ground and it did resemble the stations that you would find in New York City for the subway only we were looking at the top of the trains instead of the sides .It had to be this height so we could look down into the contents of the dump trucks to burn of any excess steel or rebar that was hanging over the edge. We often got more than we bargained for. We found body parts and other personal items. The items we came across most were men and woman's shoes. I found this strange. They were in good condition for the most part but we never found a complete pair. As with any new crew you have to get to know each other and what someone can and cannot do but the straw that broke the camels back was when we were assigned a woman in the union to help us out. I would not even be wasting your time telling you this if she did not play the poor me card. She did not pull here weight (which was significant) and was very arrogant. When I had asked her what here experience was she replied "well every time I go to do something ,one of the guys would always insist on doing it for me"..I immediately replied "that train left the station the day you arrived here"
I was more than happy to show how things worked and was guilty myself on some occasions of helping her only because I wanted to get the job done that year not to mention keep an eye on my sandwich.
