Everyone talks about the financial aspects of debt, which are, of course, considerable. But what about the emotional aspects. People who find themselves buried in debt often suffer from bouts of depression and might even feel suicidal. It is important that you get your life back on track financially, but you must also worry about your emotional health. Some people deal with debt easier than others, and if you find that you have trouble handling debt emotionally, it might be time to get some help.

Acknowledge the Debt

The first step in handling any problem emotionally is acknowledging it. Too often, we slip into a temporary (or permanent) state of denial in which we force ourselves to forget the problems that have created emotional baggage. When you acknowledge the fact that you've allowed yourself to fall into debt, you can begin the process of setting things right. Denial might help you to handle debt emotionally for a while, but you can't assume that just because you've forgotten about something, it's just going to go away.

The best way to force yourself to acknowledge your debt is to put all of your bills in front of you. Sit down at the kitchen table or at your desk and start calculating the amount you actually owe. Then put stars next to the debts which need to be covered first, and number the rest in descending order. Once you've seen that you owe money and started to create a plan for paying it back, you'll be able to handle the debt emotionally.

Forgive Yourself

The opposite of the previous example is just as bad: Beating yourself up about your debt isn't going to fix it. Sometimes when we make mistakes, we want to punish ourselves as though we were children, and this simply isn't healthy. Instead, make the decision to forgive yourself. Everyone slips up now and again, and fixing the debt is entirely feasible.
