Tips for Balancing School and Work

Having a full-time job is a big commitment, as is going to school full time. So what about when you have to do both? Thousands of Americans are faced with the task of balancing school and work, which is a full-time job in and of itself. Not only do you have to have time for both, but you must be able to align your schedules just right so they don't overlap. And when you crawl home with hardly enough energy to drive your car, you'll have to study on top of it all. Here are a few tips for balancing school and work.

Carry an Organizer
Whether electronic or on paper, you'll need a way to organize your schedule. Take it from someone who knows: You can't hope to remember when you have tests, when you have to arrive early to work, when you have a meeting and when you're supposed to go to lab without an organizer. This will help you to keep all of your appointments straight, and you'll find that you can't live without one after a couple of weeks. Balancing school and work should be made as easy as possible by staying organized.

Start Small
It is never a good idea to start a full-time job as well as a full course load all at the same time. Instead, work up to your goal by signing up for just two classes a week and cutting your job pack to part-time hours. This will give you an idea for how balancing school and work will go, and you can slowly increase your obligations as you adjust. If you jump in with both feet, you'll likely drown.

Balance Your Classes
Just because you're balancing work and school doesn't mean that you need to take six difficult classes at once. Make life easier on yourself by mixing difficult classes with easy ones so that you cut down on your study time. Your boss won't like it if you're cracking the books when you're supposed to be creating spreadsheets and you won't be able to perform well at school or work if you're not getting enough sleep at night.
