"The Lost Tomb Of Jesus," the documentary film produced by "Titanic" director James Cameron for the Discovery Channel, may possibly be the first documentary ever debunked before it ever aired.

And now it won't be seen. At least not now.

The Discovery Channel, after protests from Christian and archaeological groups around the world, has postponed the documentary, which was scheduled to be aired on Monday, March 5.

The film, which claimed that small jars of bones found in a suburb of Jerusalem, could have contained the bones of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and other relatives. The documentary also claims that Jesus had a "secret son" with Mary Magdalene, named Judah.

Even before the documentary was well-known, archaeological groups had already disinherited the claims it made. Perhaps the most well-known, at least among archaeologists, is Amos Kloner, a former archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority. Kloner, who inspected the ossuaries - the ten small jars which contained the inscriptions and bones that started the whole controversy - dismisses the documentary as nothing but bad science, although he admits it will probably make a lot of money for the documentary team.

Father Babu Joseph, the spokesman for the Catholic Bishops Conference of India, spoke out vehemently against the film. "The documentary is not based on proven historical fact. Historically speaking, evidences closer to the event have more authenticity than evidences dished out after 2000 years. According to Biblican and non-Biblical sources, it has been believed that Jesus rose from the dead, and that is the basis of entire Christian faith and tradition," he said.

The Catholic Secular Forum had also protested the airing of the documentary, which is accused of "trivializing" the entire Christian faith.

In postponing the airing of the documentary, the Discovery Channel expressed regret for inadvertently hurting the religious sentiments of the Christian community.

There are skeptics and then there are skeptics. Several decades ago, I heard this joke: The bones of Jesus were discovered, and various authorities were asked to comment. An eminent skeptic was quite sur-prised: "So he really existed??" The Discovery Channel's recent 2-hour docu-mentary on "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" certainly pre-sumes and confirms the existence of its subject. I found the program and the subject matter fascinating. I'll have to do more research, though, before I can pronounce it "compelling." An avalanche of argu-mentation has already occurred--within 24 hours of the program more than 60 small print pages of websites about it have cropped up on the Internet. As must have been the case with many viewers, I have certain questions which I have not yet seen addressed: 1) Like religious people everywere, Christians have always been drawn to relics and sacred places. Is there any evidence that first- or second-century Christians gave any special attention to what

I saw the film last night and think it was a great documentary that needs additional investigation, and could be a very important find. Of course the evangelical right wing and the catholic church are going to object to it .... but lets not forget that these "bible-thumpers" also objected to Abraham Lincoln's wanting to free the slaves in the south. Last time I checked, America was still a democracy. If these people evangelical right wing aren't comfortable living in a FREE DEMOCRACY, then let them all move to an island of their own. Americans need to protect our right to freedom of thought, otherwise the evangelical right wing and the catholic church would love to turn this country into another Afghanistan .... and they will be the new American Taliban. I honor the Discovery channel for not giving into these "closed minded" small brained religious strong arm tactics. It's the Discovery channel, the name says it all. If these people are afraid of the possible truth that a his

I find it rediculus that that any group has the power to tell the public what they can and cannot watch. there are millions out there that dont have faith in the catholic church or any church for that matter and would rather search for the truth on their own. I am an avid watcher or Discovery channel and am dissapointed in there choice to not air the program, I hope another channel will pick it up.

I believe the report you are referring to only references India. The show is still scheduled to air at 9 PM (ET/PT) in the U.S.
