The woes of the Florida Department of Corrections apparently continues to run unabated even under the much stricter and tougher leadership of Mr. James McDonough. Mr. James McDonough was brought in and appointed Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections in 2006 by ex-Governor Jeb Bush in the aftermath of the scandal surrounding then Department of Corrections Secretary James V Crosby and Prison Director Allen Clark.

The scandal involved some of Florida's top prison officials receiving kickbacks and other Correctional staff involved in a myriad of criminal activity ranging from misuse of prisoner labor, falsifying employment applications, misappropriation of state funds and illegal possession and use of steroids. The result, in numerous Department of Corrections employees fired, some prosecuted, and most recently, Mr. Crosby and Mr. Clark entering guilty pleas in Federal Court to charges of receiving kickbacks.

Mr. McDonough's tenure as Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections has been continued by the newly elected Governor of the State of Florida, Charlie "Chain Gang Chris." Mr. McDonough has vowed to continue efforts to restore integrity to the Department of Corrections and to raise the level of Professional Standards among its employees.

However, a much darker and sinister side of the Florida Department of Corrections has recently manifested itself among the Department's Medical staff at Wakulla Correctional Institution, one of the Department of Corrections Faith and Character based institutions.

According to the Department of Corrections records, Inmate Henry A. Ashford was transferred to Wakulla Correctional Institution on November 27, 2006, to participate in the Faith and Character based program. Mr. Ashford is a 58 year old Black Inmate who has a long history of cardiac problems and chronic hypertension and has previously suffered two heart attacks while in the Department of Corrections.
