WNBA's Seimone Augustus Named EuroCup Player of the Year

Seimone Augustus, a former LSU guard, was named the EuroCup Player of the Year today by the overseas league.

Augustus plays in the WNBA for the Minnesota Lynx during the regular season, but has been playing on the Galatasaray team in Turkey during the off season in the USA in a quest to capture the Euro Crown for team.

Galatasaray lost the first game to Russia's Club Dynamo Kursk and faced a possible elimination if they lost another game, but Seimone was responsible for leading her team in a second half rally to upset the team in the second game by a score of 62-39. Augustus scored 38 points in the game, only one point shy of beating the other team's final score. Galatasaray went on to win the EuroCup, the first for the team.

Seimone Augustus has racked up numerous awards over her career in collegiate basketball, as well as in the WBA. At LSU, she broke a school record by starting in 140 games during her career at LSU and was named the National Player of the Year by the Associated Press, won the State Farm Wade Trophy, the Naismith Award, the John R. Wooden Award, was named the 05-06 Honda Sports Award Winner for women's basketball, received Senior C.L.A.S.S. award, earned Kodak All-America honors three years in a row, and numerous other awards.

Augustus's outstanding performance at LSU made her the #1 draft pick of the Minnesota Lynx in 2006. Augustus will start her 4th season with the Lynx when she returns to Minnesota in June. She has averaged 21.3 points per game, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in her WNBA career.

You may also remember seeing Seimone Augustus as part of the 2008 Women's Olympic Basketball team that brought a gold medal home from Beijing for the USA.
