The most productive and beautiful gardens have one thing in common, the gardener created and continues to maintain a healthy garden. Careful planning and good practices are key to growing a healthy garden that will reward you through the growing season with beautiful flowers and a bountiful crop.

No matter what type of soil you are working with it is still possible to grow a beautiful and healthy garden. Before you begin you must determine the environmental factors, soil conditions and local pests that will determine how you garden. Any garden that you start or want to improve will benefit from good soil, healthy plants, preventative and measures to control pests and the proper growing conditions.

Here are the basics of growing a healthy and successful garden.

Provide Fertile Soil

Good, fertile soil is the backbone of a garden. If you overlook the soil that you will be planting your garden in you might as well not plant at all. Fertile soil is healthy soil and it in turn produces healthy plants. There are several was to improve the quality of your soil and depending on what type of garden you are planting your soil will have different needs. For flower and vegetable gardens soil high in nutrients is the most desirable and can be accomplished by adding compost to your soil. When growing herbs high nutrient soil is exactly what you do not want so compost should not be added to the soil.

Again, first determine what type of garden and plants you will be planting and then modify your soil to fit their growing requirements. In all cases though you can protect your soil and prevent garden problems in three ways. Keep both tillage and compacting of the soil to a minimum, prevent erosion with the use of mulch, and try growing as much living covering over your soil to prevent erosion but mostly to keep the soil healthy.

Adding compost adds a lot of nitrogen to the soil and the chemical reactions nitrogen causes changes the taste plants have. An herb has a distinctive taste of its own and an abundance of nutrients, nitrogen, will alter that...often making it bitter.

Good tips. Unfortunately I live in a co-op complex and the side I live on only gets the sun for about half a day, so I'm limited in what plants I can grow. I mainly stick to herbs and perennials that don't need full sun.
