When David Beckham signed a contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer that would net him $250 million, enthusiasts of the sport predicted a soccer awakening in the United States, one that would bring the country up to speed on the most popular sport in the world. However, as David Beckham suffers an injury that would hamper an aging soccer star, the fact becomes even more clear. Soccer is not going to become one of the most popular sports in the United States and it isn't because David Beckham isn't large enough of a start. The reason is, it has too much to compete with in terms of the other sports that are already stabilized.

America's version of football, the National Football League, is too much of a monster to compete with on any level. One look at the mega-party that surrounds any city that his hosting the superbowl is a prime example. South Beach Miami was already a party hot spot and managed to be exponentially increased with the arrival of the superbowl. In terms of sheer popularity, one need only look at the NFL off-season. When no teams are playing the NFL still dominates headlines. Free agency signing is feverishly covered, more so than in any other sport and the NFL combine and draft are events in themselves. The beginning of the NFL season is also an incomparable event, fully showing that the NFL season is the most anticipated within the country. This speaks volumes when the average sports fan in America can't find a soccer a game let alone tell someone else when the season begins, ends, or even how long it is. Soccer is attempting to pry into a market that is already locked down and comfortable, there's no way they'll ever be capable of rivaling the NFL in the US.

Dude, the reason we have riots is because we actually have a love for the sport. Soccer is our love and our passion, what do u have just go and cheer, thats wack man. We actually love our teams and because that we tend to be crazy at times. but no duh David Beckham wont change the way Americans look at soccer. But with the purchase of David and other great name like Cuatemoc Blanco, Scholetto, Juan Pablo Angel, Denilson and other great players we can start to actually compete with other american ports. Of course we wont beat out the nfl or the mlb or the nba its just common since. But in a couple years things could probably change.

Bill is right. Soccer across the world does only one thing good...cause drunken European fans to fight, start fires, which makes the rest of the world realize how lame the game really is.

This is just stupid. The MLS can succeed AND the NFL can succeed. Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? MLB, the NBA and the NFL (and in some respects the NHL) all have succeeded. By this article only the NFL is a success. What a joke. Not to mention these sports are played at different times of the year AND most franchises are owned by NFL owners.

I hate to tell you, but soccer is going to continue to grow. It is now the most played sport in the United States, and the number of players in the US continues to grow each year. I am not saying it is going to compete with the NFL. The NFL is a media powerhouse, but the NHL and even the NBA and MLB should watch their rear-view mirrors. After all, all three of those are beat out by NASCAR already.

BILL, I JUST HAVE TO SAY ONE THING. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. THANK YOU

What nonsense. Let's make things clear. Firstly it's called FOOTBALL not soccer. Secondly nobody WANTS America to have it, we'd rather you kept to your girly games of softball and "american" football where nobody dares to do anything without 5 feet of padding around them and they rely on the halftime girls in bikinis and beer to entertain the crowd. Worry more about your next war please. Don't ruin the beautiful game.

Dear Soccer Enthusiasts; I'm sure you've read these headlines: * Soccer regularly shamed by fan violence (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070226/ap_on_sp_so_ne/soc_extra_time_1) * Teen arrested for Italian soccer death (http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php%3fStoryID=20070228-035718-3305r) * Soccer violence leaves 13 injured, 27 arrested (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php%3ft=181427) * Soccer violence in Latin America is noted (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/world/2007-02-22-latin-america-violence_x.htm%3fcsp=34) Incidents like these occur weekly and sometimes daily around the world. We at NACPAS are greatly concerned and alarmed by this behavior that plagues the world over. It is only a question of time before similar things begin to happen here. We have come to the conclusion that the root cause of this growing cancer is the game of soccer itself. This is indisputable. No amount of security or law enforcement will deter mainac
