Human Ownership Guide to German Shepherds
What one breed is one of the most popular in the world and used by the police and military? Of course, it is the German Shepherd. They are an excellent pet especially for a large breed. They have an excellent temperament and intelligence.
This makes it easy for the human owner to train them with their easy going nature.
German Shepherds never appear hostile and are self-confident. They are wary of strangers, but once accepted, the human owner is a friend for life. German Shepherds are protective of the ones they love. My sister when small was attacked by someone with a stick and the dog broke loose and chased off the person.
They enjoy the companionship and playing with their human owner. They will do poorly, if they are left alone for long periods of time. They are a guardian and a work dog. This means they need to be kept busy. To make a German Shepherd truly happy, it needs to be given a task.
They are normally longer than tall. German Shepherds are fast yet graceful and nimble. They are large enough to tackle a man.
Grooming is an important to their well being. They shed heavily, so daily brushing is beneficial. They should only be bathed once or twice a year. Otherwise, it will lead to skin oil depletion.
Even though they are excellent pets, they are great guide dogs and excel in service therapy. Also, the military uses them for bomb sniffing and customs for drugs. Of course, the police department loves to use them for police work.
They have a life span of about 13 years. They seldom bark but they make a wonderful watch dog due to their size. The kids taking fruit next door would run off once, they saw the Shepherd and she started barking.
German Shepherds get along fine with other pets. All of our Shepherds got along great with our smaller dogs and cats
Most German Shepherds are black and tan. Occasionally, there will be different variations including a white shepherd. The white shepherds will be part of a litter that has the black and tan shepherds.
