How many illegal things can you get in your underwear? In the naked news of the day airports have introduced a new safety measure. Now, security will know just what is in your underpants, and they won't have to pat you down from head to toe. The government now needs to look under your clothes when you enter the airport. They need to see the unseen. Knives, plastic guns and liquid explosives are getting past the metal detectors, and puffer machines can only detect explosives that are done sloppily. Since carry-on bags are already x-rayed, the next place to hide things is on your body. Therefore, the government wants to x-ray you now. Smile for the radiation!

The new x-ray technology goes by the name of a backscatter, and this machine can identify anything of unusual density on your body including drugs and explosives. The backscatter is already running in Phoenix. It is now coming soon to New York and Los Angeles.

Thanks to terrorism, the government has to resort to electronic strip searches in order to keep passengers safe on airplanes. Although these machines do not reveal everything in absolute detail, they do display more than you would probably like someone to know about your "assets."

A positive aspect of the backscatter is that it can help rid airports of underlying racism. In the past, it was thought that security guards profiled passengers, suspecting non-whites of carrying illegal items on planes more than whites. The backscatter does not allow those viewing the x-rays to distinguish race or facial features. Everyone will be subject to electronic strip searches. Thankfully, the police officers that see you in the flesh never view you in the monitor. Therefore, you are seen, but not recognized. There is some privacy after all. On its website, TSA promises that images will not be transmitted, stored or printed. Therefore, it's just sort of a one-night scan at the airport.

Ewww, a pat down? I couldn't take a stranger touching me like that.

This is creepy to the limit. I don't care if the machine operator is 20 miles away and cannot see my face, there is something wrong with this. I personally prefer a pat down to this, and that is saying a lot!

Thanks uncgrad. I wasn't aware that someone had done an article on this before. Voluntarily? Ha! Who would volunteer for something like this.

It's nice to read a new perspective on this technology. As I discovered when I wrote an article on this subject, the screening is currently voluntary. It will probably be some time until it is routinely used on all air travelers, but I agree that it if the backscatter is routinely used it would make it very difficult for a passenger to sneak contraband items past the security checkpoint.
