Go Smoothly from Your Wedding Reception to Your Honeymoon

Getting to the Airport on Time!

Though many modern couples decide to wait a day or two before departing for their honeymoon, leaving from the wedding reception is tradition. True, rushing straight from the festivities can be stressful, but there are ways to make the journey easier:

Give yourself enough travel time from the wedding reception to the airport, train station or wherever else you'll be heading. Timewise, your safest option is a morning or early afternoon wedding and reception, followed by a mid- to late evening flight. If you're committed to having an evening reception, consider waiting until the next day to depart for your honeymoon.

Hire a chauffeured car to take you straight from the wedding reception to the airport, train station or wherever else you'll be departing from. When making honeymoon reservations, don't forget to ask if the driver knows his or her way to your destination. To be safe, schedule the car to arrive at your reception an hour before the event ends. At this point in the festivities, have your maid of honor or best man check to see if the car has arrived. If it hasn't, ask one of them to call and inquire about its whereabouts.

If you can't afford to pay for car service from the wedding reception, or if it will be easier to have a friend or relative take you, make sure this person has directions to your destination. This will save any last-minute scares.

Have your packed bags stashed at the wedding's reception hall. Make sure, before you leave the house, that you have your traveling clothing, any necessary medication, all necessary traveling papers, and anything else you'd like to bring on your honeymoon with you. Suggestion: Pack a few bottles of waters and protein bars or other portable snacks. Many brides and grooms find that during the wedding they were so busy with reception duties, they never had a chance to eat. Traveling on an empty stomach makes for grouchy honeymooners!

After the wedding bouquet and garter tossing, change into your traveling clothes and rejoin the reception festivities for a few moments before leaving.
