Stepping up to expose the reality of HIV, Jenna Bush has wrote a book that will hit stores in the fall. Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope is a tale of a 16 year old single mother in Panama that is living with HIV. The story will reach the heart of everyone, however the target is young adults. The lesson that Bush would like to provide is if someone is having sex, use protection.HIV is a retrovirus that is the cause for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or otherwise known as AIDS. This is a condition that is causes the immune system to fail. The immune system is what protects the body by fighting off infections. The infection (HIV) can only be transmitted by transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breastmilk.
Bush hopes that this book will help children understand that even if a person has HIV, they will not become infected by conducting simple acts such as hugging or as Bush explained, "inviting new kids to sit with them in the cafeteria".
"I have been inspired by my work with adolescents in Central and South America," said Jenna Bush. "These young people have faced extreme hardships and exclusion but are strong in spirit and have an incredible will to succeed. Through their stories, it is my hope to motivate young Americans to increase their awareness of other young people around the world: to learn about the challenges they face, how they triumph over adversity, and to become involved in helping them."
The book deal was negotiated by Kate Jackson, SVP/Associate Publisher, Editor-in-Chief of HarperCollins Children's Books with Washington D.C. Attorney Robert B. Barnett.
"We were very moved by Jenna's passion for this project," said Susan Katz, President and Publisher of HarperCollins Children's Books. "Her message in this book is about hope, involvement and inclusion, told through one teenager's story of survival and strength."
Bush will donate her earnings to UNICEF.
