A few years ago Who Wants to be a Millionaire brought back the game show craze. It had been a long time since game shows were popular. Many game shows followed but none would match the popularity of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

We're now in a similar situation again. NBC's Deal or No Deal has become a big hit and now all the other networks are cranking out game shows try to find the next hit. Since game shows are so prominent right now I thought it'd be the right time to come up with the top ten game shows of all time.

10. Double Dare - Physical Challenge! When I was a kid I was a big Nickelodeon fan so of course I loved Double Dare. What kid doesn't like to run around in slimy muddy gook? The obstacle course was the best; I always wished I could've run that obstacle course just once in my life.

9. Win Ben Stein's Money - After years of having parts as minor characters in movies and television shows Ben Stein finally became a star on his own game show. Ben Stein's brain and dry humor were matched by nobody. Win Ben Stein's Money also introduced us to Jimmy Kimmel. You decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

8. American Gladiators - I remember loving American Gladiators when I was a kid. It was like two people competing in an action movie rather than a game show. There were so many cool events. I loved the jousting and Powerball events but my favorite was Assault. The contestants had five weapons they could shoot to try and hit a target but while they ran to the weapons they had to avoid a Gladiator shooting tennis balls at them. Like Double Dare, American Gladiators ended with an obstacle course, who doesn't love an obstacle course?

7. Jeopardy - Jeopardy is a classic game show. Unlike most game shows on this list, or game shows in general, Jeopardy actually takes some brains. When you get a question right on "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" it's no big deal but when you answer a question on Jeopardy you feel like you've accomplished something.

Takeaways
  • Press Your Luck's Whammy was the best thing game shows have ever produced.
  • Press Your Luck introduced the world to Colin Quinn, Denis Leary and Adam Sandler.
  • Who Wants to be a Millionaire was the first game show to add suspense.

I think Tic Tac Dough is the greatest tv game show of all time. I am the world's biggest Tic Tac Dough fan.

The Match Game isnt mentioned. The 1970's version was rather risque for its time

Great selections. Did you know the Press Your Luck host died a few years ago in an accident? I was sad to hear about it. I wish they would get a new one on the air and boot some of these sorry fake "reality" shows off of the air!

Double DARE was awesome. So was legends of the hidden temple. Oh man they should really bring back American Gladiators !!! Jeopardy is still a nightly favorite, and with Daytime Millionaire i am set! Good topic.

I don't like Bob Barker, either, so I rated you back up.

Aww man! I completely forgot about Family Feud, I loved that show. On a sidenote, my rating has gone down since I said I didn't like Bob Barker.

I'd have put Family Feud (is that how you spell that word? It doesn't look right)on the list, but only when Richard Dawson was the host.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire really had people talking.

Great! Did you hear about the contestant on Press Your Luck that had spent years in front of a VCR memorizing the rotation of the lights? He was the show's biggest winner, and the studio investigated him, and wanted their money back...

I loved the Dating Game with Chuck Woolery, and Hollywood Squares with Paul Lind as the center square, although I was too young to get all his double entendres (sp?). Remember when people had to buy prizes after every round on Wheel of Fortune?

Only if Marc Summers was the host?? You mean there was another host?? No way! Anyway, I never understood the Price is Right popularity. Guessing prices of stuff is lame and I don't get the Bob Barker love either. I'd rather watch Supermarket Sweep!

Excellent chpices Lee. Press Your Luckis one I used to watch with my Grammie so it will always be wonderful. I will admit to watching the occasional rerun of Double Dare, but only if Marc Summers was the host!
