When an invite to a baby shower is received, most people get excited. Then, the realization of the present conundrum comes to light. A lot of people have no idea what to get a new parent, especially ones that are not parents themselves. Here are a few guidelines to follow when buying a baby shower gift as well as some gift suggestions. Following these will pretty much guarantee a successful shower gift.

The first thing that you should do is ask questions. Make sure you know the baby's sex if it as known. You also need to find out if the mother will be breastfeeding or formula feeding and if they will be using disposable or cloth diapers. Check to see if they have a nursery theme picked out. This is
information that you need to know to buy a proper gift. Here are some gift suggestions that you can use in varying price ranges.

Medications- Pretty much the only medication that a healthy baby will use in the first few months is Tylenol and Mylicon drops. These are 2 medications that will definitely get used. Anything other than that you may risk it not being needed.

Baby clothing- Babies grow at amazing speeds in the first year. Consider buying 3-6 month clothing as opposed to 0-3 month. If the baby is a fairly large baby it may completely pass the 0-3 month clothing. Buying clothing in a range of sizes will be more helpful than buying all one size.

Diapers- Diapers are a great thing to buy since diapers are always needed.

Bottles- Ask the mother if they want drop-in bottles or the traditional hard plastic bottles. Bottle brushes and drying racks are also extremely helpful.

Baby Gear- Check before you buy a car seat, stroller, or high chair to make sure that they do not already have one. Also ask what features that they would like in the item you are thinking about purchasing. Baby items are very personnel so buying a large item such as these can result in it just being returned or go unused.

With the gifting do's there are also the gifting don'ts. I would suggest not giving these gifts since it can backfire.

Great ideas and I like that you said NOT to buy formula. Some people might waste their money on that before really considering. Thanks !

Some other great suggestions are: a favorite children's book, a hand knit blanket., infant toys (you can never have too many rattles and colorful sensory toys (skip the noisy, battery operated toys and go for more traditional types of toys. Also find out if the expecting mom is registered and that will help as well (even to get an idea of what her taste is).
