He strangled them with fishing line, rope or any other thing available on the spot. Gary also engaged in torture like rape and necrophilia.

On the Day of 30th November, 2001, when he was leaving a Renton, a Washington factory in which he was working, police arrested him for the murders of four women whose cases were directly linked to him through DNA proof. In November, 2003, he pleaded the guilty for 48 counts of murders; however he says that he actually killed more than 90 women.

Gary was born on 18th February, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mary Steinman and Thomas Newton Ridgway. He was brought up in the McMicken Heights in the neighborhood of SeaTac, Washington. Gary's mother was a violent personality and domineering woman, who discouraged her sons to establish the relationship with others. Relatives remember that she was always yelling at her husband. At the age of 14, Gary was still a bed-wetter and this unsavory relationship would have an impact on Gary's development.

When Gary was child, his IQ was 82 with significantly low intelligence and his performance in the high school was so low that he had to spend two years in order to gain the decent grades to pass. Gary's class mates at his school referred him as congenial but forgettable. Gary had troubles in his teenage time; at the age of 16 he stabbed his first victim. His first victim was six year old boy, who was lured into the woods but he survived the attack. According to him and Gary, Gary walked away with laugh and told "I wanted to feel what it would like to kill somebody".
