Melyssa Kate Kowolski has struggled with health problems all of her life. She is only about half the size of a normal 9-year-old. However, last Saturday her size was perfect in helping to save the life of any elderly neighbor.

On Saturday, Melyssa and her parents heard shouts coming from the house next door. When they checked on the noise, they discovered that their elderly neighbor had fallen down. She was hurt and could not get up. Unfortunately, all the doors and windows to the house were locked. No one could get in.

Melyssa's father found one window that he was able to pry open about 5 inches. Then without hesitation, Melyssa went to work. She managed to wriggle in through the small space, find her way to the front door, then unlock and open it so help could get in to the neighbor. Now recuperating, the elderly woman calls Melyssa her "little heroine".

Melyssa was born wilth a variety of special health issues, including two holes in her heart. She has endured several operations for her condition. Academically, Melyssa has kept up with her class, and has normal body strength for her size. Obviously, she has courage as well.

Melyssa, in an interview with a local Chicago television station said, "I was always worried about being smaller because I couldn't do things that kids my age can that are taller. [Like go on certain amusement park rides.] But my mother said that one day I would see that my size was special. And Saturday - was my day". Melyssa grinned broadly, proud that she was able to help save the neighbor and prove that she has her own worth.

Her confidence and self esteem seems to have grown in size as well. The story has been picked up by broadcast stations throughout the country. A younger child could have fit through the window, but might not have had the confidence or knowledge to make it through the small window opening and then find their way to the correct door in order to help effect a rescue.
