Marvel Kills Captain America
In a surprise turn of events this morning, Marvel Comics has killed off a beloved superhero. In this months issue, Captain America is shot dead by a sniper.
Captain America, who is the alter ego of Steve Rogers was originally created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. He received his special powers from taking a dose of the Super Soldier
Serum.
Apparently, this is another step in which many are declaring as, "The Rebirth of Marvel Comics." Over the last year, Marvel has released surprise after surprise in an attempt to bring interest back to comic books.
During this time, they have released many series that have changed the current face of the comic book market. With the release of, "Marvel Zombies," readers saw their favorite superheroes turned into zombies in an alternate universe.
In the series, "Civil War," fans saw their superheroes fight each other in a war for patriotism. What else made this series unique was the public revelation that Peter Parker was Spiderman. He no longer hid behind the mask.
In this recent turn of event, many patriotic comic book readers may take offense to their hero being killed. Since WWII, Captain America has been an enduring symbol of American Patriotism.
Many will frown upon Killing Captain America during the time of a war. The death of Captain America will be looked upon by many as a slap to the face of American Patriotism.
During his more then sixty year run in comics, Captain America has fought the both the Nazi Party and Communism. Many believe that it was on Captain America's shoulders that comics saw their Golden Age during WWII.
Marvel is currently working on a Captain America movie and is set to come out in 2009. By looking into the past with comic books, it would make sense to resurrect Captain America in time for the release to increase interest in the movie.
Whatever the purpose of killing Captain America off is, one ulterior motive is clear. There will be many fans clamoring for the latest issue of Captain America to see how their favorite hero was killed.
