5 Ways to Celebrate Women's History Month

March is the official month to celebrate women's history. The United States congress actually expanded what was once known as women's history week to span an entire month in 1987 and has continually passed resolutions every year to continue celebrating women's history month.

Being a history major myself and a bit of a feminist, I would be remiss if I didn't admit to March as being one of my favorite months because of this very reason. Women are an important part of world history and deserve to be recognized and have their history recognized.

Unfortunately, women's history month seems to be one of those months that people easily forget. Black history month, in February, is easy to remember as there are commercials and civic engagements that actively support and advertise it. Women's history month does not have that much luck.

There are things that we can do as supporters of women, mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, nieces, and female friends to expand awareness of this important month and the history that women share.

Below are five things that you can do this month to spread awareness of women's history month and the important women of the world:

1. Sponsor a town hall gathering to commemorate a female leader in your community. This can be anything from a large city gathering to a family meal. Sit together and honor a strong female neighbor or family member. Talk about what she did and why she is so important. Give thanks to having her around.

2. Plan a movie night honoring female directors both famous and not so well known. Talk about their contribution to the film industry and to their nation. Some female directors, like Leni Riefenstahl, are well known for their propagandist films. A number of famous directors that might be interesting to include are: Leni Riefenstahl, Sofia Coppola, Kimberly Pierce, Martha Fiennes, Jane Campion, Agnieszka Holland, and Hilary Birmingham.
