These days, weddings are similar to competitions. The more extravagant the wedding, the more bragging rights you accrue, and what could be more extravagant than getting married abroad? This is a great travel opportunity as well as a chance to do something different. Getting married abroad may take a little longer to plan and you might experience a few headaches along the way, but if you choose a country you both love, the added effort will be worth it. To help you on the road to marital bliss, here are a few tips for getting married abroad.

Contact the U.S. Embassy
After you've decided where you want to get married (which country), your first step is to contact the U.S. embassy to inquire about the exact requirements for getting married there. Every country has different rules. For example, some countries require that you remain within the borders for at least seven days before you hold the marriage ceremony. Others might require that you translate your documents into their native language or bring documentation of a previously ended marriage. Whatever the case, things will go far more smoothly if you get this information well in advance.

Determine Your Budget
Before you start calling wedding vendors, come up with a very specific budget for getting married abroad. This will help you during the planning process and will ensure that you don't get your heart set on something before discovering that you can't afford it. In addition to wedding accommodations, get information regarding the cost of a marriage license in that particular country. The pricing will vary, so make sure you've gotten solid information.

Determine a Guest List
When getting married abroad, it is very important that you come up with a guest list well in advance. You'll have to contact each individual person and make sure they are able to travel abroad and you'll need to make reservations at a local hotel that can accommodate everyone. Try to get your friends and family to RSVP as quickly as possible, through preferably after they've gotten their passports and any other required documentation.
