No-No Teacher Lounge
The first thing you should keep in mind when you start a new teaching job is to stay away from the teacher's lounge. This may seem backwards because you will want to meet fellow teachers. However, there are much better ways to meet teachers than a teacher's lounge. This is a place where gossip of peers is heard and bad-mouthing of students is shared. Believe me, if you want to create and maintain a good reputation, keep out of the teacher's lounge. You never know who you can trust. Instead, join groups and committees and go around and introduce yourself to your peers. You would much rather give a friendly impression than a gossipy, catty one.
Lunch with Students
Students should be your number one priority as a teacher. It isn't enough to be a wonderful teacher in the classroom. You also have to get out and get to know your student's on a personal level. This is a great way to build trust and ensure hard effort in your classroom. You should never be their "buddy", but merely a confidant. Eating lunch with the students is a great way to build this relationship. Make sure you rotate your table from day to day. This will prevent any impression of favoritism. If your students love you, your administrator won't want to lose you.
