I came to pen and paper ready to write an essay about a cult religion that is so far out there on the wacko scale that such organizations as the Amish almost begin to make sense; but not now. Now my thoughts take a detour and travel of their own volition down the bumpy little lane of things we don't talk about;" where religion becomes a career choice and the cash cow is the individual church-goer.

During the chaotic rise of the Christian Charismatic movement, Evangelical Television Preachers like Jerry Fallwell saw the potential in global network coverage. Faithful Christians were willing to give away their kid's college funds, forfeit their medications and even risk losing their electricity by not making payments on their utility bills for a glimpse of even the smallest of miracles. The majority of congregations were filled with average to low income people typically trying to overcome lives full of poor choices, heartbreak, violence, addiction, sex, rebellion and any one of the seven deadly sins. These were people openly admitting to have been living at the bottom of the deepest darkest hole until they "got the Holy Ghost," or found religion in other words. Apparently these people were so moved by the theatrics of charismatic preachers that they were not only compliant and willing to abide by every word that came across the pulpit but they were also willing to give up their hard earned money.

Takeaways
  • Charismatics use dramatics and theatrics to entice church-goers to open their wallets.
  • Traveling Preachers are very much like gypsies of old.
  • Faithful followers often live in poverty so that they can pay the parish.
Did You Know?
Prosperity Gospel also known as "Health and Wealth," "Name It and Claim It," or "Blab It and Grab It" teaches that if you want God to bless you, you have to say it, pay for it, and believe it. Benny Hinn is the leader of the Prosperity Gospel today.

TV has ruined many pastors. There are many demands using TV. Not only is TV restrictive its expensive. This alone causes them to lose sight of what is important.

I have ministers throughout my family tree, and I greatly respect them; most were riding circuit ministers, who lived vagabond lives so they could preach in a dozen tiny poor churches in Appalachia. Their only real possessions were their clothes, their mules, and their Bibles. Today's "ministers" on television spend more time begging for money than preaching the word of God; that's a large part of why I can't swallow Christianity today. While I've known some very good men and women who were ministers, I've also seen far too many interested in the cash and power. It is indeed disgusting.

I'm from Oklahoma, home of Oral Roberts. Need a say more? Can you spell EMBARASSING? I despise those supposed religious men that do indeed capitalize on Christianity. It makes me sick!

Excellent article. I must agree that there are few of the Charismatic preacher today who truly preach and live the word. My great grandfather was a Free Will Baptist Minister, as were his father and grandfather before him, and they were old school. The believed and lived what they preached. I have absolutely no use for likes of Jimmy Swaggart and his ilk. As far as I am concerned, those types of peachers will be the ones burning in hell, not their flocks.

no organization is better at outright theft than most churches..willfully fattening their own coffers at the expense of many who can ill afford it.
