Remember the 1986 film Hoosiers? This film was "loosely" based on the 1954 Indiana High School Athletic Association State Basketball Championship win of the Milan Indians' basketball team. This is the real town, small town Milan, Indiana. If you are interested in the real story of that small town long-shot win you can visit the 54' Milan Museum, Inc. They have all the real dirt on what happened in '54. Milan still takes pride in that glorious day some 50 plus years ago; the water tower continues proclaiming their victory.Milan sits on a small crossroads of southeastern Indiana. People say that Milan is about a half-hour to an hour, from anywhere. This small town is a rural setting with an estimated population of about 1800 for which it boasts itself as "the second largest town in the county of Ripley". Your nearest shopping hub is Lawrenceburg about a half hour away. Nearest shopping Mall is in Florence, Kentucky across the Ohio river about 45 minutes drive time.
Dining in Milan includes The Reservation at the only traffic light in town at the intersection of State Routes 101 and 421. The Reservation has been in operation under various owners for as long as memory serves on that corner. You can't miss it, there is a tee-pee erected in the parking lot. The interior is a little care worn, but the service is good, and you won't find a better breakfast or bottomless cup of coffee anywhere. The Railroad Inn is just across the railroad tracks on 101 East Carr Street, make a right after the tracks and the Inn is on your left. You guessed it! Railroad décor can be found inside. The food there is fair, though a little over priced. You can also grab a pizza or a really good hoagie at Nickalo's 806 Warpath Drive.
Recreational opportunities are limited in such a small town setting. There is surprisingly a golf course, The Hoosier Link's Golf Course, at 488 N Country Club Drive. The course is a community facility with 20 tees driving range, 18 regulation holes, contact information (812) 654-2440. You will find a branch of the Osgood Library on 112 Franklin Street. For anything more entertaining than that you will need to leave!
