Like paying taxes, and registering for selective service, Jury Duty is described as a civic obligation. As a citizen, it is something you must do, willingly or not. To have the freedoms of living in the United States, citizens must serve the country to judge criminal trials when called upon.

US Citizens Can expect to be called for Jury Duty.

Jurors are selected randomly from voter registration lists, motor vehicle lists, telephone directories, and utility company lists. Therefore, chances are, if you live in a country you will be called upon at one time or another. Being called does not mean you will have to serve on a trial jury, but that you will be interviewed to serve. A person can be called on as often as once a year. If you receive a summons, you should not ignore it but respond, whether you are able to attend or not.

Why do I have to serve jury duty?

Many people do not want to serve jury duty for one reason or another. Perhaps I will cause a financial hardship if they miss time for work. Perhaps children will be left without a caretaker is a parent serves. Other people feel it will cause emotional distress to themselves to serve. Jury duty service is not voluntary. This means if they call you, you must respond. If you have a good excuse to not attend, you may be excused. Reasons you may be excused are financial hardship, case bias, pre-formed opinion, or if you are a convicted felon.

screw the gov.13 th amendment no slavery or forced servitude. Why be forced to sit in a cold building on hard slabs they call benches. sue the courts for bad backs ,make them pay and maybe we can stop them from calling on us.. better yet they should only call people that are on welfare , they don't have to work and they don't anything to do.

on a positive note, I had no problem getting out of jury duty when pregnant and/ornursing, or when I first began homeschooling. I have not been called on since, but suspect my sensitivies would not survive seeing bodies/ body parts, and or tons of blood and gore.

Definitely, I know that if I were called right now, I don't think I'd want to go. I was abused as a child, I'm a SAHM who has no childcare for my son AND who provides childcare for someone else's who might not be able to find a replacement, I'm pregnant & nursing. We couldn't survive the loss of my income, and my child couldn't go without being nursed nor would we be able to afford childcare especially with me not having any income. If they made it so that I could bring my child with me, have breaks every few hours to nurse, cosleep in the hotel room, helped me find a way NOT to have to lose all that income, I'd be much more willing. Why should I have to pay to eat out when I could cook at home? Some people just can't afford jury duty, and it's not their fault.

absolutely Heather... that might make people more prone to WANT to serve.

If anything we at least need to pay more attention to the rights of the jurors. What happened to freedom? Why should anyone be forced to subject themselves to that? If we are going to force that we need to be careful of the jurors rights and needs. Counseling needs to be available before, during, and after the trial, and we need to be sensitive to them just as we are to othe rmembers of the judicial system.

During jury duty, the jurors rights are trampled on. People come out of trials in need of couonseling they they have to pay for if they get it themselves. Who did the crime anyway?

Why should jury duty be mandatory when voting is not? I absolutely love this country, but I also think we need to be sensitive to single moms who have no childcare or can't lose money by not working, to people with disabilities or illnesses especially of the mental kind, to mothers who are nursing their babies and don't want to wean early for the sake of jury duty (and breastfeeding is as important as jury duty; children are the future).

I agree with you. Certainly people who are breastfeeding or homeschooling children, who have no way to arrange childcare, or who have pre-existing mental conditions should not be forced to do jury duty. Like voting, it should be a choice--not a mandate.
