There is a laundry list of rules to follow when watching birds in your backyard. You mustn't wear bright colors, make loud noises, and above all else, you must always remember to feed the birds constantly. Like any good woodland (or living) creature, they like food and if you're loyal as their food supply, they'll be loyal to your backyard. Not only does it offer a prime spot to sit and watch the birds coming in and out of your yard, but with a decent bird feeder, you might stall you neighbors from asking questions like "Why are you crouching in the bush next to my fence?"

A good bird feeder is a solid landscaping decision, making your yard look that much nicer and enticing to the neighbors, your guests and the birds that you're trying to attract. There are dozens of options for feeding the birds though, filling up that feeder and optimizing the variation of birds that might come through your yard throughout the year.

The first step is to head to your local nursery, gardening center, or bird-feeding specialty shop to check up on as many options as you can for bird feeding. Any decent clerk should be able to help you find the perfect options for whatever birds you're trying to attract.

But, keep in mind that no matter what kind of food you put out, what kind of bird you're trying to attract, and how often you fill up the feeder, if you don't make sure that only birds are eating the food, you're not going to see the results you're looking for.

Squirrels are your worst enemy. The best approach is to offer more than one source of food, putting a couple of different feeders around your yard. The odds are you won't attract every squirrel, raccoon, and possum in the neighborhood, so if you have a couple of sources, there should be enough for everyone. Also, bird-feeding stores will sell squirrel proof feeders if you're still unable to keep them away long enough to offer the birds all that feed your buying.
