American Idol had big news tonight and it wasn't just the final 12 (which in itself should be a story). American Idol announced that there will be a special two night event on April 24 and 25 called Idol Gives Back. The special will "raise awareness and funds for organizations that provide relief programs to help children and young people in extreme poverty in American and Africa." In preparation for Idol Gives Back, Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell traveled to Africa to see the conditions in which many children live. Paula Abdul will visit Mississippi while Randy Jackson will visit Louisiana where they hope to make a difference in the lives of needy children.

The first day of Idol Gives Back, The American Idol show on Tuesday April 24 will be a normal show featuring the top six performers singing songs with an "inspirational" theme. After the show viewers will be able to vote as usual. The twist will be that for each vote cast, the show's sponsors, Coca Cola, AT&T, as well as Ford, will donate money that will go to the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund.

The second night of Idol Gives Back, the results show on Wednesday, April 25 will be a two hours event (8-10 p.m. ET live). This will be a "star-studded extravaganza." Performers will include: Gwen Stefani, Pink, Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Annie Lennox, Borat, and Bono. Viewers will be able to make their own charitable donations on toll-free lines and via the Internet. The money raised by both shows will benefit children in Africa and the United States equally.
Ryan Seacrest quoted Bono in saying that, "We'll see worlds collide when Africa appears on America's most-watched television show... it's a little bit of pop history."

I think it's a wonderful thing to help people in need, but at the same time I help run a homeless shelter in Beloit wisconsin. It is The Sparrow's nest homeless shelter, and we are asking for help everyday of the week. It is not a wealthy community, so the donattions we receive are very minamal. It's nice to help other countries, but I wish someone would right here in the U.S.A. this shelter has been around for 10 yrs. now because the O'Leary family has made it happen, each day get's harder. But we would like to be able to continue to help the homeless for another 10 yr's. And we are the only shelter in the whole county that helps men. Homeless shelter funds dwindle as needs arise. We are ran by private donations and the grace of GOD. It would really be nice to see some of that money put to use right here in the united states. We both did an article on this. I think it's a great idea to help others with something that is so popular. Nice article.

I enjoyed this show and I just wonder how much the judges gave? Ellen (hosting at the Disney Auditorium in LA) said she was donating $100,000 but no word from anyone on the American Idol panel. Still, it's a great cause, and it's nice that it also focuses on the Gulf Coast where a lot of help is still needed.

Great information Renee! I totally missed it when it came out, but I think it's great that they're going to be giving to others.....they definitely make enough off of that show to do it!

I think this is really a wonderful thing to do. And the fact that they are spreading the help around among different continents is even better.

It was great to hear that Idol is going to help people who really need assistence. I just hope that the people who disburse the funds for this project won't be the same ones who tally the votes for the competition.

It is always good to see celebrities giving back. I think we should just go all out and give Simon Crowell to some third-world, poverty-stricken country.
