Hard rock star Eddie Van Halen, famous for hard drinking, has reportedly checked into rehab, according to the official Van Halen official website,

There is a note from Eddie, dated March 8, 2007. on the Van Halen Website. the note is addressed to the fans of Van Halen. He explains that since he is not able to give his best he has decided to enter a rehabilitation facility to work on himself.

The move seems the leave the status of the upcoming summer tour in question. The much heralded tour had been reported by the February 21 Rolling Stone Magazine as "shut down" . The Los Angles Times attributed the reunion's demise in part on Eddie Van Halen's drinking, according to E Online.

Eddie Van Halen's move into rehab means that he won't be able to attend the band's induction into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame on Monday in New York.

David Lee Roth is refusing to attend the induction because organizers have turned down his offers to perform. Another band, "Velvet Revolver" will play a medley of Van Halen hits instead.

While Roth was not able to confirm that Van Halen was seeking treatment for alcoholism, he did suggest that the move would be healthy for Eddie and for the band. He said that if Ed could dry up they could become a stadium act.

Eddie Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli were married for 24 years, before Valerie Bertinelli filed for divorce in December, 2005. The couple had been separated for 4 years. They were the ultimate good girl-bad boy combination. Ultimately the heavy drinking took too much of a toll on their marriage.

Valerie Bertinelli is best known for her role in "One Day at a Time". In more recent years she had a role as an angel on the popular hit "Touched by an Angel" The couple has a teenage son named Wolfy.

Van Halen struggled with mouth cancer. In 1999 doctors diagnosed a lump in his tongue as malignant. He had been a lifelong smoker, but quit smoking. In 2000 he had a portion of his tongue removed. A few months later he started smoking again and the cancer returned. According to People Magazine, Valerie lost patience with him and told him he was on his own. After that he did quit smoking again.

He has had this problem so many times before. I think the difficulty with a lot of rockers in maintaining sobriety is that the nature of their profession puts them in the same circles of their peers who also abuse drugs and booze, so it's that much harder for them to resist the temptation. I hope he succeeds this time around.
