I'm a long-haul trucker and don't have much time for anything but driving and sleeping (not at the same time, of course!) But, in spite of my long hours and limited possibilities, I manage to set aside a little time every week or two for something I really enjoy. It's not that hard to do, even for me. Since I live in my truck, the following suggestions are geared to people who have the same lifestyle.

MAKE TIME FOR FUN

Suggestion One

I love to read, so I always have several new books with me. When time permits, like being stopped during road construction or closures, I read. It takes my mind off the daily routine and gives me something new to think about.

Suggestion Two

Audio tapes of Perry Mason books, or Edgar Rice Burroughs Martian series, among others are very entertaining during the late hours of the night when the radio isn't clear. I listen to news, talk radio and sports during the day.

Suggestion Three

During the warmer weather, I carry my fishing pole and usually manage to drown a few worms (or lures) at least twice a month. There's water almost everywhere and all I need is a place big enough to park the truck for an hour or so. Needless to say, I catch and release because the idea of taking a dead fish around in the truck with me isn't very appealing! But being out of the truck for a little while and relaxing beside a lake, river or stream is like a mini-vacation.

Another thing I drag along with me during the spring and summer is my golf bag. Only once a month or so do I have the time to actually play nine holes. But it doesn't take very long to hit a bucket of balls, and even that little bit of exercise can be beneficial. Most towns have golf courses and taxis, so when I have a long wait between loads I try to find a place to unwind and have some fun.

Right on, Don. When I was driving, I carried my fishing rod with me too. Even if I could only fish for a 1/2 hr. it was enough to refresh me for the upcoming miles.
