There are many different kinds of disabilities, but you should know that if you are a disabled individual you have rights. The law provides for disabled individuals by requiring compliance to all statutes, but you won't know if they're being followed unless you know and exercise your rights. There are plenty of insensitive people in the world who aren't opposed to cutting corners in order to make their lives easier or to save money. You can fight for the rights of all disabled people in this country by insisting the laws are followed in your community.

Familiarize Yourself with the Laws
Use the resources available to you to familiarize yourself with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other laws and statutes that protect the rights of disabled individuals. You can find most of this information on the Internet by visiting ADA.gov or USDOJ.gov and reading up on the law. The more you know about your rights, the better you'll be able to exercise them.

Join Groups and Organizations
While the voice of one person is certainly powerful, you can make yourself heard more clearly by joining groups and organizations for disabled individuals. When you're a part of a larger group dynamic, you'll have the power to affect changes in your community that might otherwise have gone untouched. Not only that, but you'll also be able to raise awareness among other people who can help in your efforts.

Become Active in Your Local Government
Attend city council meetings, vote in state and national elections, campaign for politicians who are concerned about disability advocacy and work toward creating a better world. The government is your best shot at making changes that can benefit all disabled individuals, and this is one of the best ways to exercise your rights. If you really aren't interested in getting involved in politics, support others who have that goal.
