Hermiston is a progressive small city in an agricultural and transportation hub of Northeastern Oregon. Economically supported by agriculture, food processing industries, utilities and light manufacturing industry Hermiston is a transportation center both for locally based trucking companies and as an interline hub for national trucking companies. The area is accessed by two intersecting interstates, I-84 traversing east to west, and I-82 traversing north to south. The rail road and river transportation systems are within five miles of town, and there is a small airport for corporate and private planes. A large commercial airport is within 35 miles.

Hermiston is one of those places where you can combine country living with sophisticated urban activities. Martha Stewart would probably call Hermiston "a good thing", or maybe she would say it more like the locals do; "its just a good place to live". The cost of living is reasonable, even low compared to many other areas. It's a good place to live, work and retire. There are beautiful assisted living facilities with private apartments and recreational activities.

Community pride is often mentioned when talking about living in small towns, and Hermiston has that pride in the schools and sports teams that make community pride vibrant in town. For a demonstration of that pride mosey up Main Street to the East Side Market. The proprietor is a fierce Bulldogs fan and the boys (working men) who gather in the morning for coffee and donuts in the market's social space discuss the plays from previous night's games with insight, passion and humor.

I grew up near Hermiston - in Pendleton, about 30 miles away. Hermiston has an image of being inhabitaed by backward, uneducated people. My mother and I joke about being "sucked into the Hermiston vortex." Granted, Hermiston has great watermelons, but that's about it. Move to Pendleton, it's much nicer.

I love small towns and Hermiston sounds like the perfect example of nice small town. I am sure many of the locals will never want to leave.
