Perhaps you've thought more than a couple of times how it is possible that humans may be the only species in the animal kingdom with virtually no important hair function, compared to furs, for warmth, stimulation, and protection. Human hair is generally more aesthetic in purpose than functional, which explains the thriving salons, hair spas, and barbershops. However, you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars to get maximum care and pampering for your hair. You can conveniently do it anywhere, especially at home and save you more money in the process. Several environmental factors pose dangers and harm your hair everyday, which is why you have to know how to avoid damage and keep it looking great and glamorous.
1. Know your hair type. Different hair types require different treatments. If you have straight hair, simply wash it daily and dry well. Curly hair needs more gentle strokes when shampooing and drying because it tends to damage and break more easily. Oily hair needs to be washed and dried thoroughly to avoid extra moisture. All hair types become more vulnerable to breakage when wet, so be very careful.
2. Protect your hair from external elements. Extreme heat, cold or dampness can be stressful for your hair, which may lead to discoloration, hair loss or breakage. Sea or pool water contains a lot of salt and chlorine, causing your hair to dry, so apply leave-on conditioners before taking a swim. The sun also poses a lot of ultraviolet damage on hair. Wear a wide brim hat or bring a dark colored umbrella when outdoors.
3. Protect your hair from treatments. Straightening irons, extensions, braiding and heat curlers can dry and damage your hair so use them moderately and strictly follow specified time of treatment and application. Too much heat can break the hair's integrity especially when wet, so make sure the hair is completely dried before styling. Do not prolong treatment beyond the specified period indicated by the instruction manual to avoid burning and damage.
