Let's remember, there would be no "300" or "Sin City" without the comic form. The Spider Man movies would never have existed. "Batman" and "Batman Begins" would never have been plotted
Comics have come close to dieing out several times only to be, surprisingly, rejuvenated by the core characters and a breed of new talent coming in. After the tumultuous fifties, the comic field witnessed a rebirth during the sixties due to the work of creators like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko.
Has there been comics escaping the common pulp storylines that really defined them early on? Hero does this, hero fails at that, the things that pushed me away from Ultimate Spider Man and Spider Man in general. Can it be done?
Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns proved it could in the eighties. The latter by Alan Moore was an achievement of grim super hero drama; the former by Frank Miller another grim take that was intended for adults. Both deserve unending respect.
Yet, as stated, both in the eighties. There have been some attempts as of late that I have heard of on various sites. Y: The Last Man is supposed to be great, though not nearly as revolutionary as Watchmen or Dark Knight. For several years, Alan Moore was publishing more super hero drama with titles like Tom Strong, Top Ten, and League of Extraordinary Gentleman. His best works were written in the eighties, and his best work, Watchmen, has yet to be made into a movie. This is interesting because V For Vendetta was made into one. The same could be said of Dark Knight.
