As I sat with Fred the fixer of Fortune 500 fiscal fiascos, I listened and learned like a good do-bee. When Fred came in, we were negative 14,000 in our profit and loss. By Freds departure we were 10,000 positive with an outstanding pending receivable account of 46,000. Give and take would mean our profits would stand at 37,000.00. Before all of you accountants and business tycoons jump up in my trunk, please realize that my husband and I are blue collar workers that bought this business just 11 weeks ago. Not too shabby. This is all mumbo jumbo to my husband. He knows who owes what, and what needs to be paid, but, he has no clue what accrued accounts receivable are or why 7.65 is relevant to payroll. Why am I writing about this? Well, after doing payroll Friday, I balanced the checkbook only to have to tell him there is 1983.00 in our account. He responds "how? There was 14000.30 a week ago. Okay honey, pay attention. When you right checks, the money is taken out of the account. When you don't put any money in, there is still money taken out. Okay?
Later on at home, I am trying to soothe his ego. I explain a profit and loss statement to him. I also reiterate what Fred the Fixer had done. I showed him at this rate we would be thousand aires by the end of the summer. I asked him why he didn't collect money owed to him. I asked why he was expecting so much at so little a time. I try to pound into his cemented head that we started this company with no loans, no money, hope, love and prayers. We have already doubled our personal income, bought a nice brand-new car, and have had perks left and right. I tell him to look around at all the wonderful things that are happening and okay we might have a rough spot here and there, but even his predecessor had a negative balance two or three times while I worked there.
