It's hard to watch our parents age, but we have to face it. The thought of putting our parents in a nursing home can be heartbreaking, and for some, unnecessary. For some of our aging parents, the introduction of a home health care provder could mean all the difference between the nursing home and continuing with life as they (and we) know it. But we hear so often of nursing homes and home health services alike taking advantage of our elderly.
This is unacceptable, and in order to make sure that our parents are getting the care that they deserve, we as their caregivers must do an extensive amount of research to ensure that the home health care provider we choose can provide the needs that both we and our parents need for long-or-short-term use.

The first thing you must decide is whether or not to use a private pay agency. These agencies are often independently owned and require an out-of-pocket cost from you in order to provide clients with skilled care. In contrast, there are many Medicare-based agencies which provide their skilled services with little to no out-of-pocket costs from clients or their families. Depending on your family's financial situation, you may prefer to go through a Medicare-based agency, as they are held to stricter standards with government agencies than the private pay agencies. No matter which choice you decide upon, one of the first things you must do is to get everything in writing and make sure that both you and your loved one are clear on the services that are being provided by your health care agency. Some health care services only provide skilled services, such as therapies, skilled nursing, and home health aide services. Others, provided personal care and sitter services. You should know what exactly you're getting from the service and the frequency with which you're being given these services.

Takeaways
  • Medicare-based agencies provide services at little to no cost.
  • Home health services decrease or end the need for nursing home searches.
  • Medicare provides a site for home health care provider comparisons.
