Noah's Ark: The True Story

The Discovery Channel Takes a Look

The story of Noah and his ark is a famous one. Children of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish families have read the storybooks, but is there truth beyond the myth? What are the real events that built the myth? The Discovery Channel takes an engaging and interesting look in it's documentary
called Noah's Ark: The true story.

The first problem comes with the purported size of the ark. According to biblical descriptions of the size of the ark, it was nearly 450 feet long. Bigger than many ships, almost as large as the Titanic. If it were even possible to build a boat that large with wood in the time of Noah, it wouldn't have floated for long. The stresses put upon the hull of the boat would cause it to lose its shape and distort. Seams would open up, and it would sink just a few minutes after going into the water. And if the boat did manage to get out to sea on a worldwide body of water, the waves would be so huge as to crush the ark like a can.

And how could two of every different kind of animal fit into the ark? The documentary reports that as of the latest estimates, there are about 30 million species on earth. To load the ark in the one week that the bible gives Noah, 50,000 species would have to board each second. Or if he took a more manageable loading time, he would need 30 years. By then, the first ones on might be getting a little restless.

But perhaps the legend is based on animals known to exist in that area at that time, even leaving out some of the less desirable. If the instructions given in the bible are counted, it comes to about 260 animals. More doable, with a small ark. But what about the flood? How is that explained?

God said one of every kind not species. for example, there were only a couple of animals from the canine family. not every species of dog and wolf. not every kind of species were on the ark. just one of every KIND. and the boat wouldnt sink if God was watching over it.

If you reject the Bible as the Truth than you reject God. Man has become so sure of himself because of our scientific knowledge that he has turned from God. God makes all things possible, if the Bible, The Word of God, says that it happened than it happened. Have faith and trust in the Word of God.

Timothy, Who sais you can't live inside a fish there are many recorded events where seamen have fallen overbaord whaling and been swollowed by whale. They were later (days) rescued when whales were caugh and began to be harvested for their blubber. I agree that whether or not the bible is tue litterally or not the moral of the story is still worthy of merit. Most of what God does in the event of human lives is not logical, doesn't make sense and sometimes defies science. So far, I don't know of a singe archeological discovery that has disproven anything biblically. I just seems to raise more question that may get answered later. I think the bigger problem is that we are so arogant that we won't believe what the science facts tell us (that is already so evident) we create are own theories and spend billions of dollars and resources as well as jeopardize are social system to prove a lie.

For many religious types, however, unless the story is true it carries no value. To suggest that there wasn't a real flood and a real ark--for that matter even a real Noah--is to suggest the story loses its meaning. The problem lies in the juxtaposition: To others, the story loses its meaning when there is an insistence on a literal reading of events that defy science, history and logic. One day it may be determined once and for all that there never was a flood. For literalists, that means the Noah story should be excised from the Bible. Or, alternatively, one day the ark may actually be found. Okay, the non-literalists were proven wrong. But their belief will not suffer as a result of being proved wrong. It seems to me you lose nothing by accepting a non-literal reading and gain everything.

Jeff, what we have here is the same situation as Jonah. We all know there's no way anyone could live inside a fish so we view the story as parable. (And the fish part isn't even the point of Jonah's story, by the way.) The problem, as I've written about continually, is for some reason many people NEED to view the Bible as completely literal. It's the same mindset that causes movies to be publicized as Based on a True Story, as if a totally fabricated fiction can't provide an even more valuable lesson. Many movies not based on a true story are far, far more valuable at providing life lessons. And then, of course, you get "true stories" like Oliver Stone's JFK which is 99% fiction.

"By then the first ones on might have been getting a little restless..." Priceless. I am still laughing.
