Fats Domino

Fats Domino is an American classic rock and roll and blues piano player. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1928 with the name Antoine Dominique Domino. Some of his more popular songs like Blueberry Hill were actually written by others, but he gave them a rock tempo and made them into mega hits. He is often credited with having the first rock and roll album to sell over 1 million copies with The Fat Man in 1949. This is when he first came to heavy national attention.

I am usually much more interested in guitar but having transcriptions of his piano for guitar I can tell use that he is brilliant musician. He can make take a basic blues riff and change the up sound like the work of Mozart. This is true musical genius.

Domino toured extensively until the 80's. He decided not to leave New Orleans. He figured that he had enough of an income. He also said he could not get a decent meal anywhere else. Now I can relate as some of the best food is served south of the mason Dixon line. Being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and invited to perform in front of the President did not even get him out of New Orleans. He was persuaded to do some shows around the immediate area and in Texas.

Fat's home was in the path of Hurricane Katrina and he would not evacuate due to the poor health of his wife. He went to a shelter when the Coast Guard evacuated him. His grand daughter's boyfriend Jamarcus Russell (Still at LSU at the time) let the family stay at his place. President Bush made a personal trip down to replace some of the awards that were lost, including some that were given by former President Clinton. He currently is active with several charities and plans to rebuild his home as he loves the area.
