What Went Wrong with Season 7 of the Biggest Loser?

Something went very, very wrong with season 7 of The Biggest Loser reality TV series.

This round, dubbed Couples 2 on NBC, began on January 9 and concluded on May 12, 2009. As this season progressed, everybody picked their respective favorites, just as in past seasons.

What was marketed as different about season 7 was that the contestants were the largest ever on the show. Both the oldest man and the youngest contestant competed, as did the heaviest. There was also an extra helping of drama due to the serious medical conditions of several contestants.

Viewers were never furnished one important piece of information that might have made the finale less of a surprise. The show never revealed how long the last four contestants spent losing weight between the last regular episode and the finale.

As America chose between Michigan dad Ron Morelli and his son Mike as to who would be the third finalist, only one thing was certain. Tara Costa of New York, who won more challenges than any other player in the history of the show, was the player to beat.

Voters selected the younger Morelli, just 18, over his dad. When all three contestants arrived on stage at the finale, it was obvious that they were significantly smaller than on the episode that aired the prior week.

As they weighed in, it was also clear that this season turned out to be very disappointing. While each episode mentioned the $250,000 prize to the contestant who bested the rest and weighed in with the highest percentage of weight loss, most viewers hoped it would be about more than that at the end. It wasn't.

There was no denying lives were changed in huge ways for the better among the eliminated players, many of whom hardly resembled their "before" photos. But in the end, it seemed to all come down to money.
