A herniated disc is sort of like a car without any shocks. The lumbar discs act as a cushion between your spinal vertebrae, keeping nerves from pinching. When a disc is worn down or torn by injury or illness, the herniated disc can be quite painful. In most cases, you will need to be treated by an experienced and knowledgeable physician, but there are a few things you can do at home to aid in recovering from a herniated disc. The most important thing to remember is to give your body plenty of time to rest and heal.Use a Firm Mattress
When recovering from a herniated disc, you will probably need bed rest for at least one or two weeks. While this is a positive step toward recovery, you should also have a firm mattress that keeps your back flat and still. If your mattress is too soft, you can always purchase a firm mattress pad to cover the surface or place boards underneath the mattress for added support. Your pillows should be likewise firm and thin to keep from elevating your head too much. An orthopedic bed isn't necessary, but some doctors will recommend it.
Try Different Sleeping Positions
The most important thing to remember when recovering from a herniated disc is that your sleeping position should be comfortable. You shouldn't sleep on your stomach -- even if that's what you're used to -- but sleeping on your side or back should be fine. To keep your back straight, try putting pillows under your knees when sleeping on your back or between your legs when sleeping on your side.
Take Pain Relievers and Muscle Relaxers as Prescribed
Pain and muscle spasms are the two most popular complaints when recovering from a herniated disc. Your doctor will probably prescribe both a pain reliever and a muscle relaxer, so take them as directed. Remember that both of these medications might make you drowsy, so only take them when you'll be able to rest in bed or on the couch. You should be particularly vigilant about taking your medication at night so that you'll get plenty of sleep, as interrupted sleep patterns is a common symptom of herniated discs.
