Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, to a Scots-Irish family, the second of three children, his mother Elizabeth Arnold Poe an actress, his father David Poe an distinguished officer and lawyer had three beautiful children William the eldest brother, Edgar, and Rosalie, the younger sister. The two started life in Mr. Placide's Theatre Company in Boston, David Poe had abandoned his family and in a short period of time in 1811, Elizabeth had died of tuberculosis, having to leave their children orphaned and in poverty. Elizabeth was buried in the churchyard of St. John's Episcopal Church, the oldest church in Richmond. William had died and Rosalie was stricken with mental illness. Edgar was taken into the home of a wealthy tobacco merchant and Scottish citizen of Richmond John Allan who had no children of his own adopted Edgar the bright, beautiful boy became attached to him and made him a son of his own. Edgar was sent to school at Stoke Newington at the age of seven, where he remained there for six years studying under private tutors.
